Coronavirus: weekly funding updates - 29 June - 3 July

As we receive updates from our research team in Liverpool, we'll post weekly updates to coronavirus funding programmes and more to help you (remember - don't forget to share!)

No time to read 50-page government policy documents? Don’t worry – we’ve done it so you don’t have to. Check out our short summary of the UK Government’s Our Plan to Rebuild policy paper on ending the social lockdown – wherein we summarise the key points, outline current timings, and raise issues for charity staff and trustees to consider (which, let’s face it, you won’t get in the gov.uk version). London Funders – The London Community Response Fund

The London Community Response to the COVID-19 pandemic is coordinated by London Funders, the membership network for funders and investors of London’s civil society. There are three types of grants available in the new wave of funding announced on 1 July 2020:

  • Crisis grants are for organisations that need to provide food, essentials and support as a matter of urgency to communities in crisis;
  • Enable grants support work that helps to prevent difficulties arising from the crisis escalating, and that enables people to emerge from the crisis; and
  • Adapt grants help organisations to restart, adapt or collaborate for the future.

The application process is open to all civil society organisations across the capital. You can apply for funding under this wave even if you have previously received funding under wave one (food and essentials) or wave 2 (crisis response or delivering differently). Rothschild Foundation

The Rothschild Foundation has suspended its usual application processes for all grant programmes, but has established a Covid-19 Support Fund for organisations providing support for communities in Buckinghamshire which are currently experiencing high levels of disadvantage and who are likely to be disproportionately affected by the impact of Covid-19. The fund will offer grants between £5,000 and £50,000 for service provision that directly responds to the needs of communities, as well as services that are not frontline but are nonetheless an important part of the rebuilding process. Priority will be given to organisations with an income of up to £1 million, particularly ones that can already demonstrate having impact in the county. The fund opens on 6 July 2020 and will close in December 2020. For further information, details on eligibility and how to apply online, see here.

The Theatres Trust

The Theatres Trust is providing free specialist advice for theatre owners and operators, as well as local authorities and campaign groups supporting their local theatre on business planning, maintenance, and planning applications. They can also provide advice on how to adapt your theatre to make it compliant with social distancing measures. The Theatres Trust has also adapted its London Small Theatres Grants Scheme so that grant money can now be used to cover the additional costs of reopening incurred as a result of social distancing measures. The Endrick Trust

The Endrick Trust is a Scottish Trust that supports general charitable purposes at the Trustees’ discretion. The Trust is open to applications for emergency funding related to Covid-19, which at this stage should focus on humanitarian need within the Glasgow postcode. Applicant organisations must be registered with OSCR or with the Charity Commission for England and Wales. Charities should be aware that the deadline for submission of applications is 4th September 2020, and the Trustees will make their decisions at their next meeting on 6th October 2020. Further information on the Trust, eligibility and how to apply can be found here.

The Radcliffe Trust

The Radcliffe Trust supports classical music performance and training, especially chamber music, composition and music education, especially for children and adults with special needs, youth orchestras and for projects at secondary and higher levels. Conscious of the fact that traditional performance-based projects will be impractical in the foreseeable future in the light of the current pandemic, the Trust has temporarily amended its grant-making programmes. Grants will be for one year instead of the usual multi-year arrangement; and the Trustees are looking for innovative and imaginative projects that have been developed in response to these challenging times. Applicants must be able to demonstrate that projects can be delivered within the prevailing government safety guidelines. The next deadline has been revised to midnight on 14 September 2020. More details on eligibility and how to apply can be found here.

Steve Morgan Foundation

The Steve Morgan Foundation has extended their Covid-19 Emergency Fund until the end of September. Opened in March, this fund was set up with the intention of giving £1 million a week in grants to charities in Merseyside, Cheshire (west of the M6) and North Wales. Requests for funding, however, have been much lower than anticipated so the Foundation has extended their emergency programme until September. Charities and not for profit organisations with an annual turnover of less than £1 million providing front-line services are eligible to apply, but the Foundation will be prioritising applications from organisations supporting individuals struggling with their mental health. Application forms can be found on the Foundation’s website.

Stevenage Community Trust

The Stevenage Community Trust has grant schemes available for both individuals and organisations in need during the Coronavirus pandemic. Local individuals and families who are struggling financially during the crisis may be eligible for a grant towards essential items and living costs. The Trust does not accept self-referrals, so professionals or recognised organisations must apply on behalf of the individual or family. Charity and community organisations that require urgent funding as a result of Covid-19 can also apply for an emergency response grant. Application forms are available to download from the Trust’s website.
